I've been told driving is dangerous there, and don't plan to. I'm not so much interested in sun and surf as I am in art and culture. Does anyone have experience living/ teaching English / or traveling around Turkey? If so, could you share any tips or useful information with me? Benefits? Things to pack from home (Canada) I can't get there? What's the cost of living like? Any areas you would advise me to check out? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance :D! I'm planning on moving there in the spring / early summer 2010. theseaoryou, posting in cutshort @ :
I was going to request a faux-hauk, but I didn't get a good feeling about the girl cutting, so to play it safe, I asked that she just do a simple trim. Now I am home and still want a faux-hawk and am out $12.95 I was wondering if this is something I could possibly pull off myself? I suppose I could just start chipping away, but I don't want to screw it up. My hair is basically in the correct shape, it's just too long on top. December 17th, 2009labellabonaroba, posting in usa_in_ireland @ : cross posted from my blog And by that I mean I will never be one of those people who gives a bunch of presents in gift bags. One thing about living in a different country is that you discover your customs are foreign in ways you never expected. For example: in my house, when you give a gift that's soft, like clothing, you wrap it in a box. Usually, the store will give you said box for free. Maybe this is why they call America the land of plenty -- all you gotta do is say, "Can I get a box with that?" and there you go, FREE BOX for your wrapping pleasure. I quickly realized that gift boxes aren't really a "thing" here, but I thought no problemo, I'll just buy gift boxes somewhere. Because at home you can buy them at any pharmacy, stationery store, or department store. Well, let me just say I've been to a LOT of shops in Dublin this week, and there are no gift boxes to be had. I mean, Easons had these really small fancy things that looked like pre-wrapped boxes, but not clothing gift boxes. Just gift bags. Everywhere. Mark insisted that his family wraps soft items as-is, and that it was "the way it's done," but I actually did not believe him. But then I talked to a friend about it and she corroborated his testimony. Not only that, but she didn't get what I even meant, that's how foreign the concept of gift boxes for clothing was. She also said that half the fun of Christmas was feeling the presents and trying to guess what they were. After a brief pause, I said, "Yeah...we tried to guess by shaking the boxes." The idea of wrapping an irregularly shaped object is horrifying to me. Everything must be in a box!!! Is that weird? Even if it is, I still think it's better than handing someone a gift bag. meaghie_poison, posting in cutshort @ : need ideas December 16th, 2009mspeacockwi, posting in usa_in_ireland @ : Shipping Items from the U.S.? I have been in Ireland for 8 months now. I don't plan on moving back to the U.S. anytime soon. I still have a lot of items in the U.S. that I would eventually like to bring to Ireland. None of the items are anything incredibly large. No furniture, etc. Almost everything would be able to fit into a suitcase, except for a few baby things I would like to bring over to. So far everything that I have brought from the U.S. has been packed in my checked baggage when I've gone back to the U.S., etc. The problem is, EVERY SINGLE international airline I have checked only allows one checked bag free of charge. They changed their policies. They used to allow two free of charge, now it's only one! I normally fill an entire checked bag alone just with clothes, food, etc. from the U.S. to bring back to Ireland and that doesn't include any of my stuff in storage! Each additional bag for airlines are about another $45-$50! Talk about expensive! Has anyone used an ocean freight service to ship their items? I'm just looking for a rough estimate of how much it would cost. No company will give me an estimate unless I know the exact weight of my goods. Of course I don't know that yet because I'm not in the U.S. :) I just want a rough estimate to help me decide what I want to do. If the minimum price is $500 or something, then I would just forget it. Does anyone have experience with this? UPS has freight service, but I know others do as well. Were you pleased or dissatisfied with the service you used? Current Mood: December 15th, 2009amoraeternus, posting in eurotravel @ : Oh Vienna I'm going to Vienna next week. What not to miss?
